Volcano Poo Glycerin Tincture

Here’s a new use for your Volcano vaporizer leftovers. Glycerin tincture is a great, portable way to medicate sublingually. You can also cook with it or add it to drinks. None of the fat and cholesterol of butter and brownies, and without the added effects of alcohol in alcohol-based tinctures.

Supplies

  • Volcano Poo / Vaporizer Leftovers
1 gram to 1 oz of Glycerin works well for me. Potency will depend on the potency of the poo, you may wish to adjust the amount to get your desired potency.
  • Food Grade Vegetable Glycerin Most health food stores will sell this in 16oz bottles under the NOW brand. You must make sure that the glycerin is marked food grade
  • Slow Cooker / Crock Pot These are available very cheap from Target, Wal-Mart, etc – or from Amazon
  • Cheese Cloth or Jam Strainer Cheese cloth is readily available wherever canning supplies are sold – the supermarket, even the hardware store.
  • Funnel
  • Large Rubber Band
  • Bottling Supplies Gylcerin should be kept out of the light, so dark brown apothecary bottles are best. I’ve found some great deals on Amazon and at the local health food store. You’ll want bottles with 1ml droppers.

The Process

  1. Add 16oz of food grade glycerin to crock pot
  2. Thoroughly mix in your volcano poo or vaporizer leftovers
  3. Put crock pot on lowest setting and cover with lid
  4. Stir hourly
  5. Allow mixture and crock pot to work their magic for at least 8 hours
  6. Turn off crock pot and allow temperature to cool off
  7. Prepare the funnel by making a cheese cloth filter for it. I take a good length of cheese cloth and completely unfold it. The fold it in half once and then once again – giving me a square that is 4 layers thick. I lay this over the funnel, and use the rubber band to secure it. My funnel has a little tab on the rim so you can hang it, the rubber band runs right below the rim, and then hooks over this tab keeping it tight at the rim.
  8. Place the funnel over a large canning jar or whatever clean glass storage vessel you like.
  9. Carefully spoon the glycerin/poo mixture into the funnel.
  10. Let gravity do its work. I let mine drip overnight.
  11. You can now undo the rubber band securing the cheese cloth to the funnel.
  12. Make a ball around the remaining material and tie off the top.
  13. Using latex gloves squeeze the cheese cloth package to wring out any remaining glycerin. It’s important to wear gloves because you can end up dosing yourself through your skin.
  14. Safely dispose of the cheese cloth poo ball. Don’t put it anywhere animals or pets could end up eating it!

Usage

The glycerin can be used in recipes, it has a sweet taste. Or you can use a dropper under your tongue for sublingual use.

Dosage

The potency can vary wildly depending on too many factors to list. Titer the dose by starting with 1 drop under the tongue, wait 15 minutes observe how you feel and take another if needed, repeat until you reach your desired dose. You may wish to spit out the glycerin after it’s been under your tongue – swallowing will cause it to be absorbed later in your stomach – possibly enhancing the effects.

Important Notes

  1. The quality and state of the volcano poo must be considered. If you don’t like the way it tastes/smells before you make glycerin with it, you certainly will not like the taste of the resulting product. So I think this process is only good for folks who vape at lower temps and have lighter colored volcano poo.
  2. The cooking temperature must be slow and low. There should be no bubbling. If your crock pot is too hot even on the lowest setting, placing some crumpled tin foil beneath the pot can help diffuse some heat.

Thank you for posting this recipe! I use a box vaporizer and vape at 300 degrees. For my first batch I used 16grams of vaper poo, 24ozs of vegetable glycerin, and a teaspoon of cinnamon. Cooked on low for 12 hours and it turned out great! 3 drops on the tongue and 15 minutes later it’s like I just smoked one! Thank you again!

    Awesome! Thanks so much.

  3. Jizbert on January 30, 2013 at 3:25 pm

I agree with no name. The vapo poo tastes sickening and didn’t do a damn thing where a high is concerned. It might work as a sedative if your able to down enough of it.

    • miki on February 26, 2013 at 1:36 pm

If it tastes bad, you must’ve burned it – I tried again, with fresh and with poo. GREAT results. I put it in my hot tea when we’re at a restaurant 🙂

Was this posted on April 1st. Just tried it. Fookin smell was awful and the taste was absolutely vile. Followed instructions to the t and tried 10ml no effect whatsoever, don’t know how I managed to keep it down. Even wasted a good amount of good herb on this when I added it to boost the strength. Absolutely disgusting people don’t waist your time and money.

Hi, I have Ulcerative Colitis much like Crohns Disease. I have never smoked out of a vaporizer and have no idea what the product referred to, but assume is it waste plant matter.
Someone onhere was commenting about smaller quanitities. When I buy glycerine around here youd think I was making a bomb, the health food stores are hecka suspicious. I have only been able to get 4 oz bottles of NOW Glycerine.
So I decarbed my plant matter 250′,and then chopped it up iin my coffee grinder (friend hooked me up with stems and stalks and even roots) I used 5.5 gr. of my own Budda Kush and a half of a cold dry ice hash nugget that there was no way I could smoke without being catatonic.
I have no small crock pot so I have boiled my water in a pot on stove once and then turned to low upon stirring occasionally for 4 hrs have a deep amber liquid, I am going to let it stay on low in a water bath for approx 3 more hrs. I have cked the water of the tincture liquid, and it is 160′.
This is my first time. I was going to use a resuable coffee filter and then if necessary cheesecloth. Has anyone had luck with this type of mixture? Should I let the plant matter stay in overnight and then strain? I have watched a cold press tincture method on youtube, but Im going to try to warm and strain tomorrow.
I have a question though, I have heard of people smoking an herb called Damiana, I have ordered some and was going to add some to the next batch, it is said to produce a high like effect, fir 1 1/2 hrs? Has anyone tried this??
    Thanks everyone. Peace out!

Greets all. I am new to all this and trying to get an alternative to vape for travel destinations. (Hours in the car kill my back.)

After all my reading, this is what I have ready:
-16 oz glycerin (I felt this was more versatile than butter. Plus, once made, won’t require another process [baking cookies, etc.])
-5×7 hops bags (from micro-brewery supply. Seems easier than cheesecloth.)
-crockpot (seems easier than double boiler)
-started saving my poo for future use, but have fresh ready to go.
-I know I still need a bottle to store product in.

I was wondering what could be added for flavor. Basil? Anything? I just thought, I might as well.

I am also wondering how small a batch I could make. I certainly don’t need 16 oz, although I recognize it needs enough to submerge the hops bag.

And finally, if successful, what should I expect my process to be? Just drip a few drops under my tongue and wait? Is that the goal?

I understand that once dosage is figured out, I could drip into drinks, etc. I am just looking for pain relief and hanging out in the basement by myself. (MY wife doesn’t want any contact, even smelling the vape.)

Anyway, thanks for any last minute advice. I am happy to join this respectful culture.

    • SansPantz on September 20, 2012 at 2:36 pm

Also, am I correct to assume grinding it down a bit will help the process rather than larger raw pieces?

      • Vapormaster on September 20, 2012 at 4:15 pm

Absolutely! More surface area = good.

        Now put some pants on!

    • Vapormaster on September 20, 2012 at 4:14 pm

I was wondering what could be added for flavor. Basil? Anything?

Whatever your pleasure. If you leave the flavor out, the tincture will be more versatile in use. I did mint once, but got sick of the flavor after awhile. If you do add fresh herbs for flavor, I would add them at the very end for a short amount of time – like 20 minutes.

And finally, if successful, what should I expect my process to be? Just drip a few drops under my tongue and wait? Is that the goal?

That’s the idea. Depending on the strength of the tincture you may end up having to use more. Your leftovers need to be of high quality to get a tincture that can have effects with just two drops. And of course, everybody is different : )

      • SansPantz on December 6, 2012 at 2:44 pm

Okay, I know this has taken quite a while but I’ll spare you the details…the important thing is I finally finished the process.

I feel my method was very successful. Slow cooker (~$20 any store), hops bags (~$5 online) Ball Mason jar for afterwards.

The poo in the hops bag worked like a perfect cheesecloth in tie-up a bag form. I wore dishwashing gloves to wring it out (VERY important to not absorb through skin) and just tossed the bag when done. The hops bags came in like a set of 4 or 5, so I have plenty of supply.

The smell didn’t travel too far through the house…I cooked in the bathroom with the fan on, which sucked the smell out of the house successfully. HOWEVER, whenever I lifted the lid, very strong odor.

I cooked for about 6 hours, let cool overnight. NOw, everything is cleaned up, back in order, and I have a jar of black gel.

I did tasts the glycerine before hand, so I knew what it was contributing.
Right now, I don’t have the nerve to try it yet…I feel like it is dirty from cleaning ashtrays because it smells SO strong.

So potency and application are all that I have left to try.

I’m open to any thoughts and I’ll let you know what comes next.

        • miki on December 10, 2012 at 10:51 am

I just made some and I feel the same – I’m afraid to try it because i tasted a teeny bit and it tasted like an ashtray (not that I’ve ever… i mean… lol) I used 16 oz of glycerin to about 40 g of poo, and I only do about two bags before I dump out the poo.

        • Vapormaster on December 10, 2012 at 12:59 pm

I’m thinking your crock pot got too hot and you may have burned the glycerin. It doesn’t taste like fresh green, but when done right the finished product is a dark brown, not black and tastes like volcano poo.

          • SansPantz on December 10, 2012 at 1:11 pm

Well, I guess I’m happy to read the updates because I realize I burned mine as well. (Although it didn’t smoke at all.) Guess I need more glycerin and have to start collecting again for attempt 2.

I will say that you folks really need to go with the hops bag; perfect usage – RiteBrew – Muslin grain/hop bag – 5″x7″ – 5 pack

Question: Is there a dropper bottle that travels well? Links to product appreciated.

  7. bigtalk on September 17, 2012 at 9:30 am

whoa. i think you just invented a glycerol based thc suspension liquid for ecigarettes

    • bigtalk on September 17, 2012 at 9:39 am

upon further research, you invented a concentrate. diluting with 80% propylene glycerol will yield a very good quality ecigarette liquid.

cant get more cost effective than that!

      • Tore on November 4, 2014 at 5:27 pm

Not really,it depends if you talk about PG eliquid, VG e-liquid, PG/VG Mix.

PG liquid is only glycerin + flavoring. Diluting it 80% would make it ineffective i would imagine. One person here said they used 16oz glycerin and 60 oz of poo. and that required 6 ml to have noticeable effect. That is allot of puffs on a e-cigarette. But i might go ahead and try in anyway, have a shoe-box filled with strip-bags of poo.

        • Tore on November 4, 2014 at 5:29 pm

Ahh, and that was 2 years after your post. I guess the liquids and devices have changed

  8. hashmaster on August 19, 2012 at 6:28 pm

making some right now, using the same 60 grams of volcano poo to 16 oz of food grade vegetable glycerine.

have my crock pot on “warm” setting but not sure what temp this is, however I am positive it is the lowest possible setting my crock pot will cook at…think it will be ok?

Oh yeah, i also tossed in a gram of random hash & keif into the volcano poo/glycerine mixture so that should up the potency…i hope : )

    • Vapormaster on August 20, 2012 at 8:23 am

      How’d it go?

      • hashmaster on August 20, 2012 at 11:04 am

it went well, although squeezing stage really sucked and wish i had a way to press all the tincture out of the ‘cano poo ball….

after 160z of glycerine to 60grams of cano poo and 10 hours in a crock pot….the dosage is approximately equivalent to what has been discussed earlier, about 6ml per dose seems to carry good effect. Flavor leaves a little to be desired but imagine de-carbed fresh greenery would make a much tastier tincture…

honestly just waititng for the tincture to kick in a little more to give a better idea of how effective it is

        • miki on December 10, 2012 at 10:52 am

please let me know!!! mine just looks so gross.. and I’m afraid I burned mine because it did smoke out a bit while cooking.. is that possible?

          • Vapormaster on December 10, 2012 at 12:57 pm

Yes! Your crock pot is too hot. There should be no smoking of the glycerin.

            • miki on December 11, 2012 at 10:50 am

DAMMIT!! so does that mean I should trash it?? what a waste!!

              • miki on December 11, 2012 at 10:55 am

it is brown, not black… I JUST DONT WANT TO WASTE IT!!!! it only smoked a little bit, and once it started smoking i turned it down right away… just lie to me!!! lol.

  9. Allen on August 3, 2012 at 10:47 am

Im in the process of making a tincture. Would you recommend setting the crockpot at a Keep Warm or Low setting for the best results?

    • Vapormaster on August 3, 2012 at 11:20 am

I would go with the lowest setting. “Slow and low that is the tempo”

  10. California on July 23, 2012 at 4:36 pm

I’d like to share a little trick I did that I haven’t read on the net yet.
After draining your finished product into your dropper bottle and storage container you will find it is virtually impossible to get all the tincture to drain because of its thickness. So I poured some lemonade into the bowl and let is slosh around and then poured it through the same funnel (which was also coated with tincture) and made a nice little super charged hemp lemonade.

    • Vapormaster on July 23, 2012 at 4:45 pm

      Great and tasty tip!

  11. California on July 22, 2012 at 3:54 pm

Anyone tried using a french press after the crock pot step? Might work by itself or maybe drop the cheese cloth wrapped ball at the bottom and press that?

    • Vapormaster on July 23, 2012 at 8:22 am

I actually bent the rod on my cheap Ikea french press trying to do this : (

    • fastcore666 on November 30, 2012 at 11:00 am

I tried this the other day with my $20 french press from Kroger and it worked like a charm.

I wrapped by poo ball in cheesecloth before i put it in because i wanted to be able to apply more pressure.

  12. California on July 21, 2012 at 12:33 am

assuming you did this with 16oz of glycerin, about how many fluid oz of final product will you be left with?

I see people doing this exact same method but without the crock pot. They let the herb and glycerin alone without heat to do its thing over a 2 month period. Most people talk about taking it out of the cool dark place they store it and shake it about every day during the 2 months. So no contest on which way is quicker, but I am wondering what the difference in potency etc. would be with each method. (worth mentioning the guides I see for both methods use fresh stuff and/or trim, and they normally have the extra step of baking it for 10 minutes at 300 degrees F. to de-carb the fresh product.)

    • Vapormaster on July 21, 2012 at 8:49 am

I was able to extract 12 oz of the glycerin, but am fairly sure I could have gotten more like 14 or 15 if I had a better setup for pressing the cheese cloth. In my experience the accelerated extraction of the crock pot works better with vaporizer leftovers using glycerin. But I’ve never had controlled equal circumstances to say which is best. Each batch is always different due to the varieties of herb that might be mixed in. I’m no chemist, but I think the reduced viscosity of the glycerin at higher temperatures would allow it to reach more nooks and crannies and co-mingle with the herb better.

      • California on July 21, 2012 at 12:09 pm

Your response time is amazing, thank you! Now that you mention it the part of the instructions, where you let gravity drip as much as possible made sense until the following step was to squeeze the remains it just seemed counterproductive. I figured the over night drip was to avoid squeezing, as I’d imagine squeezing is the accelerated way of doing it except can also let more bits of herb through.
I wish the other people who set out to try this would respond with their results! I am planning on doing this in the next few days and will most likely use all the poo I have plus some fresh stuff de-carbed.

        • Vapormaster on July 22, 2012 at 1:26 pm

There’s just no way for gravity alone to extract all the glycerin, since it’s so gooey. You can further filter what squeezing produces by letting it drip through a paper coffee filter. But I found that takes forever.

          • California on July 22, 2012 at 2:21 pm

Well not that I am in the process of making this tincture I think I understand a little better. before handling the vegetable glycerin I did not know it was as thick as hair gel or pancake syrup. I was more asking why not just squeeze it from the start but now I realize letting it drip would be super helpful.

I am almost to the cheese cloth bit and have a question. Would it be better to pour it onto the cheese cloth while it is still warm from the crock pot, because it seems to get really thick and muddy if it sits with no heat.

Also I am wondering if the little apothecary spray bottles work any better for the sub-lingual method?

So far this has been very simple and fun to make.

            • Vapormaster on July 22, 2012 at 2:48 pm

Yes, it definitely helps to pour onto the cheese cloth while it’s still warm and the consistency is not as gel like. Basically you want it cool enough to handle safely.

I’m not sure how easily the glycerin would mist, it might need to be cut with something to spray easily. I like the dropper because you can target the best spot under your tongue for absorption.

  13. Phillip on July 19, 2012 at 5:20 pm

I’m trying this recipe out now, with a ratio of 18.5 ounces of used up weed from vaporizer, to 6oz Glycerin. I’ll update with the results! (Cost like $25 to get everything to make this possible, including mini crock-pot for $10 from BBB!!)

  14. Krazo on July 10, 2012 at 6:25 pm

I used this recipe last night. We vape at 5.5 and fill the chambers half full to get 6-7 bags per bowl. We stir it and mash it a bit before the last two so we may be extracting more from the poo than normal users, and we tend to like things on the more potent side. Thus I decided to quadruple the mixture of poo. I put 60gs of poo to the 16oz of glycerin and croc’d it for a good 10 hours. I will post back with our results at that potency. I have a feeling everyone will get different result based on how they smoked the bud originally (ie, temp, ammount of times run though, grinding the bowl again half way).

I tried this recipe because of how amazingly universal it is. Cooking, smoking, sublingually, drinks (a jamba juice with this stuff will make a wonderful ganja juice). Thanks for the easy walkthrough.

    • Vapormaster on July 10, 2012 at 6:34 pm

We look forward to hearing your results, thanks for your note.

    • Krazo on July 25, 2012 at 3:49 pm

So we filled the croc pot with 16 oz glycerin and 60 oz of Poo. The product that we came out with requires a minimum of a 6ml dose to carry a good effect. This has been tried under the tongue and digested after mixing with various drinks (ie. coke, jamba juice, ice cream)

Its such an easy way to make something to cook with that I plan on making some with fresh shake to up the potency. I will post back with baking results as well.

      • California on July 25, 2012 at 4:01 pm

60 oz of poo!?! Is that a typo? Otherwise that was like 90 oz of pot before it was vaped into poo. That sounds crazy. I’m assuming you meant 6 oz?

        • Bob on August 6, 2012 at 11:07 pm

          Probably meant 60 grams

          • Vapormaster on August 7, 2012 at 6:25 am

            Let’s hope so!

          • fastcore666 on November 30, 2012 at 11:02 am

i seriously hope he meant 60 oz.

  15. John on June 12, 2012 at 6:44 am

What size apothecary bottles am I looking for?

  16. Greg on June 6, 2012 at 11:33 pm

Good article. I’m going to give it a try.

You forgot one big usage for the glycerin though – the volcano, using the liquid pads. It has worked great with herb glycerin I’ve bought in the past; it gives a nice thick, almost syrupy vapor.

    • Vapormaster on June 7, 2012 at 5:09 am

Good tip, thanks. Stop back and let us know how you make out with yours.

    • California on July 22, 2012 at 4:05 am

I tried this and got super thick white vapor that literally tasted like a mouth full of cotton candy. I had to take smaller draws off the bag than usual, but that could just be because I’m not used to so much flavor hitting my tongue. Its pretty unique and does the job.
