I spent a week with the Levo Oil Infuser making cannabis olive oil and vegetable glycerin tinctures for edibles and topicals.
So far I have been impressed with the results. I think my favorite thing about it is how easy it was to clean up. Everything breaks down into a few simple parts for easy cleaning. Much more compact and manageable than my old methods of crock pots and pyrex and funnels, etc.
The unit is nicely constructed and looks nice on any countertop. There are quite a few colors to choose from. The casing of the machine is plastic with stainless tray where the oil dispenses. A simple LED control panel is used to set temperature, time and display status.
Inside the machine is a stainless steel pot that holds 16oz of oil and connects to a silicon dispensing tube. The dispensing button on the front controls a mechanical pinch point that keeps the tube closed while infusing. Into the pot goes a magnetic stirrer and a silicon mat that helps circulate the oil.
The herb pod is a nicely constructed cylinder made of perforated stainless steel, with a silicon lid and a strong magnet on the side to hold it in place within the pot.
You put your oil in the pot, put your herb in the pod, put the pod in the pot, close the lid, enter the program and hit go. The heater ramps up and holds a nice even temperature, while the magnetic stirrer circulates the warm oil through the herb pod. When the programed time is reached, the machine beeps and turns itself off. You place your cup or container below the spout and can accurately dispense the finished oil at the touch of a button.
My one complaint with the Levo is the size of the herb pod. The stock pod it comes with holds 3.5 grams of dry herb in my experience. But if you fill the pod up all the way, you must fill the oil up as well. So you end up with 3.5g to 16oz of oil. Not very potent for most purposes. We solved this issue by doing double infusions both times, so it was a total of 7g to 16oz of oil. This worked fine and the olive oil did not taste over cooked or burnt.
I think if I’m looking to make potent edibles from ABV bud, I’d probably dig out the crock pot and make some coconut oil. I can get a ton of dry material into the oil at once. The Magic Butter machine may be the better tool for ABV as it holds more herb.
Looking forward to trying the ‘Power Pod’ in the future. It’s a new accessory they offer that appears to hold twice the herb. So I could conceivably do two infusions of ABV / Volcano Poo, and end up with a 14g to 16oz ratio, which might work well.
I also question how much stirring really occurs with the small yellow magnetic disk. It only has these very small nubs on the top. Since you can’t run the machine with the lid open, it’s not possible to witness how much the oil moves. However, every time I made a batch I did find the really fine shake that made it through the herb pod filter evenly distributed around the bottom of the pot – which made me think the oil really does get moving in there.
PROS: Easy cleanup, consistent even temperature and time control, dispenser, compact storage.
CONS: Small herb pod, hole size on pod allows fine material out.
