Volcano Vaporizer Leftovers Butter

You can use your vaporizer leftovers to make some surprisingly potent butter for cooking brownies and all sorts of treats. The potency will vary depending on how thoroughly you vape your herb. Obviously much of the active ingredients have been vaped into your lungs while you were vaporizing – but there’s a lot left in there – awaiting extraction. It’s hard to make concentrated and potent butter since the leftovers will take up so much room. It’s all about the butter/herb ratio. So the solution is to use a butter/water mixture to extract the active ingredients from the vaporizer leftovers or “volcano poo”.

Here’s my current recipe – subject to discussion and revision!

You will need…

  • 14 Grams of Finely Ground Vaporizer Leftovers
  • 1 Stick of Butter
  • 1 Pot of Water
  • 1 Stove
  • 1 Coffee Filter
  • 1 Bowl
  • 1 Refrigerator
  • Patience grasshopper

It’s quite simple. Take a small to medium saucepan. Add stick of butter. Cover/fill with water. Add volcano/vaporizer leftovers. Bring all to a good rolling boil. Boil away for 30 minutes – UNCOVERED. Remove from heat. Pour this nasty looking brew through a coffee filter and into a bowl that you can fit in the fridge. Press the plant material to squeeze out all the liquid. Skim and remove any stray material that might make it through. Paper coffee filters will be a disaster. Save yourself the hassle and get a nice reusable gold filter like Cuisinart Gold Tone Coffee Filter.

Cover this bowl and place into fridge to cool and separate – overnight works. Now here comes the magic… After the butter/water mixture has had time to cool sufficiently you will end up with a layer of congealed butter atop the dirty water. Gently remove this “platter” of butter and discard the water. The active ingredients will have dissolved into the fatty butter, while the chlorophyll nastiness will mostly go into the water. Use the butter as you would any normal butter in the recipe of your choice.

Hey man, so unfortunately I tried these directions last night and ended up failing miserably. I wasted 14 grams of long saved vapor poo sadly. I wasn’t sure how much water to put in, and I wasn’t sure how long to leave it in the fridge. “Overnight works” and “Add stick of butter. Cover/fill with water.” were kind of vague directions. I took out the bowl from my fridge this morning and was greeted with a bowl of brownish/ yellow water. I would be super appreciative if you could help me out with this and provide a little more detail.

    • Vapormaster on November 11, 2016 at 5:34 pm

Did you have the pot covered while it was boiling? If so, that can cause to butter to get emulsified with the water so it doesn’t separate.

    • Shaun on November 12, 2016 at 5:44 am

What do you mean you left it in the fridge?
You did cook it right? As in in a crockpot/slow cooker? Because the fridge won’t do a thing if not
It only goes in there to separate once it’s been simmered in the pot.
It will still work if you put it in the crock pot with the butter now and simmer for a few hours on low then transfer to the fridge. The water goes a horrible brown colour but the butter also changes colour so you know it’s worked. I do this with buds which makes the butter almost glow green.
I only saw this because I got an email which means I must have commented long ago so I will get notifications if you comment back so if you want step by step instructions let me know and I’ll help, I can even provide pics lol

      • Tyler on November 12, 2016 at 10:28 am

I didn’t see anything In the directions above about using a crock pot first, I did not cover it while simmering either. Step by step instructions and pics would be awesome when you’ve got a minute, thanks man!

        • Shaun on November 14, 2016 at 5:21 am

Right first you get your duff/vapour poo and put it in a crock pot/slow cooker
Add a stick of butter per 1-2 oz of vaped material depending on how potent you want it/ how vamped your material actually is, I use 2 sticks of butter a time but I collect my ABV (already been vaped) in a plastic quality street tub (are you from the uk? Quality street are chocolates that come in a big plastic tub and I have no idea what it holds but it’s gotta be 4-5 oz)
Bare in mind that the last time I made these i had a through the roof tolerance and actually stopped using abv and just started to use fresh trimmings but anyway, you should use what you are comfortable with but remember you will lose some butter when straining so use a stick minimum to make sure you actually get some back because I saw that you were using 14g of abv and don’t want you to only use half a stick of butter and not get any back but I was lazy and didn’t strain as well as I could.
Right I’m rambling on so let’s start again
          1) get your crock pot/slow cooker
          2) put in your ABV material
          3) put in water till the ABV is just covered then ad a little more for evaporation (use hot water from the kettle to help with the melting of the butter)
          4) add you’re stick(s) of butter
          5) turn on the slow cooker/crock pot and put it on High till it starts to simmer then turn to low and leave it UNCOVERED
          6) wait for a few hours, I’d leave ABV for 4-6 hours and fresh trim/buds for 8
          7) turn off the crock pot and get a container big enough to take all the liquid in the pot
          8) cover the new container with cheese cloth and pour the liquid through the cloth then when all the liquid is all in the new container via the cloth you need to put all the material in the cloth and squeeze as much as you can out of it trying not to let any of the material get into the liquid, you need to do this while it’s hot so use gloves but non absorbent ones so like plastic gardening gloves because that stuff is hot hot hot
          9) when it’s strained to your liking and you think you have all the butter out put it in the fridge over night and you will be left with a block of butter that has taken on the colour of the ABV but a bit lighter on top that you keep () and the water underneath that is a manky brown/black looking and nasty that needs throwing away
          10) cook using the butter just replacing any butter in the recipe with your butter
          11) enjoy.

I will search for and collate my photos and post a link to wherever I end up putting them.

I’ve visited this site numerous times. As a matter of fact, years ago when I first started searching Google on how to gauge the ratio’s on vaporized cannabis leftovers (I call it “duff”), this is the site I felt had the most useful information. I feel I have perfected your original recipe into my own (however, I consume a high quantity of cannabis so my threshold is extremely high.

I have been making my oil with “duff” for over 3 years now and have made over 100 cups in total so I’ve been tweaking it here and there to make it right.
I started off just using 28g of “duff” per cup of oil but found that I had to eat a lot of brownies to get to where I wanted to be. After a few “risky” tweaks, I am now comfortable with using 56g (2oz) per cup of oil. This quantity IS NOT for the rookie/novice/amateur/ weekend cannabis consumer.

We use our Volcano a LOT, about 28g per 7days. I am a habitual cannabis user and I’ve been using my Volcano Classic with Solid Valve as my weapon of choice for 3+ years now. I put all of my “duff” in a 1/2 gallon fresh lock container to accumulate until ready to make oil. I use Coconut oil, a: because it’s so much healthier. b: Because of its versatility in recipes. c: It’s in a solid form below room temp and a liquid form above room temp. d: It just tastes so much better.

Now for the product: I ONLY CONSUME TOP QUALITY CANNABIS. I know the quality control of it’s source so it has a pretty high THC level consistently.

Personal use background: When vaping, I use about .3-.5 per chamber. I use the stock Volcano bags and keep the bag size similar to the original size. I leave the Volcano set between 5.5-6, depending on the product. I typically will only fill 3-4 bags before dumping my “duff” into the fresh lock food container for storage.

Here is my equipment and process for making my “CannOnut Oil”:

2QT acrylic Crockpot with glass lid.
3.5C metal double mesh strainer with handle and a lip to sit atop a bowl.
4 cup wide mouth measuring cup with handle.
    2.5QT glass mixing bowl
spoon or cake frosting spreader (I prefer the spreader)
    powder free non-latex exam gloves
    oven mitts
2C Mason Jar or similar glass jar with metal top.

    112g (4oz) of “duff”
2.25C of organic coconut oil (about .25 extra for boil off)
Microwave coconut oil for 45 seconds in measuring cup (or until liquid form).
    1/2-1C of filtered water

    1. Place “duff” into crockpot.
    2. Pour coconut oil into crockpot.
    3. Pour water into crockpot.
    4. Stir until entire contents is saturated. Make sure the liquid level is higher than the duff level.
    5. Turn crockpot on high and let slowcook for 4 hours.

    6. Once the liquid begins to boil, you will want to stir with the frosting spreader and make sure to get all of the duffoil off the edges. (The water and about a 1/4c will boil off in this 4 hours so make sure it’s not sizzling at the top. If the water boils off too fast, just add enough water to cover the product.)

    7. During the cooking process, go ahead and prepare for the finished product. Cut a fairly sizable piece of cheesecloth, (enough to wrap the entire duff contents into a ball to wring out after it’s cooled to the touch.) Open cheesecloth and fold in half. Line the double mesh strainer with the cheesecloth and place ontop of the glass mixing bowl. (This is why I use one with a handle and a lip to sit on a bowl).

    8. After 4 hours (5 if you’re feeling funky), turn the crockpot off. Pour contents from crockpot, into cheesecloth/strainer/bowl combo you prepared. Use cake spreader to scrape all oil and contents. Wrap the duffball up into a ball with a tab to hold. Allow enough time to cool and wear the non-latex gloves to wring all of the oil you can get from the cheesecloth through the doublemesh strainer, into the widemouth measuring cup with handle. You can strain it a couple of more times or even use a metal coffee filter for maximum particle filtration.

    9. Put oil into fridge and allow about an hour for it to turn to a solid. My particular wide-mouth measuring-cup is a lot wider at the top than the bottom and I prefer cooling it in this because it’s easier to pry out. It also give you the chance to assure the exact quantity of final product.

    10. After it cools, poke a knife into the center of the solid “CannOnut Oil” an pry it out. (There will be a liquid-like sludge that remains in the bottom of the container. This is the extra water that didn’t boil off and solid plant material that got through the straining process then sank to the bottom of the CannOnut Oil during the cooling process (science). (It doesn’t have much use so I dispose of it.) There will also be a thin layer of a gelatinous goo on the bottom of the CannOnut Oil mold that has a much higher potency than what was left in the bottom of the container. Scrape that off and refrigerate in a small glass jar. It is edible and mind-numbing. Kind of bitter tasting. I’ve mixed it with apple butter and put it on peanut butter toast. Use how you like.

    11. Use paper towel to wipe excess water moisture from the solid then place it back into the glass mixing bowl and allow enough time for it to go back above room temperature into a liquid state.

    12. After CannOnut Oil is back in oil form pour into Mason Jar and store in fridge for optimal freshness.

The whole process takes about 5.5. 15 minutes prep; 4 hours cooking; 1 hr filtering/straining/cooling; 10 mins canning; 5 mins cleanup.

Now, the science behind this is not exact. There is no real way for me to determine the THC content that remains in my “duff”. Through it’s own description “The Volcano Classic Vaporizer, through its patented technology, removes toxins and other harmful byproducts (i.e., tars and other carcinogens) through a vaporizing process which intensifies the effects of the active ingredients released through the vapor by approximately 75 percent.” I’m assuming that leaves at least 25% of the quality of the THC in the vaporized cannabis. This is where guessing takes over for science and math because there is no “known” percentage.

Take this and use it how you wish. I can tell you that my recipe is probably at the highest pinnacle of where you want to be. When I make brownies, I use Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free brownie mix because it calls for 3/4 cup of butter/margarine….CannOnut Oil. The larger requirement of oil delivers more THC in consumption. (I also make these Vegan: I use 1/4C applesauce as a replacement for the large egg). This batch makes approx 18 brownies. 1 is the preferable dose until you determine where you are in the experience. (I’m a 6ft 180lb athlete and eat 2 and float around merrily) Dose at your own risk.

Well my fellow information seekers, I hope you value what I’ve put forth and enjoy the pleasurable experiences you will be rewarded with. Cheers from Atlanta, Ga!!

  5. Not-a-Chemist on January 17, 2014 at 2:58 am

To those who say “Don’t boil” …

I’m no chemist but this doesn’t seem hard: Water boils at 100 degrees C (at least at sea level) by definition. A Volcano has already likely toasted the poo at temperatures between 190 and 210 degrees C. And the typical brownie recipe calls for a half-hour of baking at 375 degrees F, or 175 degrees C. So your poo has already been subjected to higher temperatures than boiling water, and the butter will again be subjected to higher temperatures than boiling water.

I’ve read that the point of this boiling is not so much to change the active chemicals as to leach them, tea-like, from the plant material into a medium filled with tiny droplets of fat, to which (because of their nature) the active chemicals — which aren’t soluble in water — then adhere tightly. In other words, the point of the boiling water, and the long exposure time, is to give an opportunity to create teeny-tiny fat globules that are vigorously bumping up against the finely ground plant material.

But it seems unlikely to me that mere boiling water is going to destroy these active ingredients. Perhaps there’s more going on here than my high-school chemistry and physics will support, but if so, I await an explanation.

    • Simon on August 23, 2014 at 10:23 am

The point of boiling the vaporised waste in butter is that the fat in the butter absorbs the THC that is in this waste. This is a process that takes a while (I usually even let it go on for hours when it’s fresh weed).

After this and before the butter is subjected to higher temperatures the weed or waste is strained out of the butter so this absorption effect wouldn’t be in place while you bake with the butter later.

I hope I answered your quesion!

Just run some hot water on the bottom of the butter. The white residue comes right off.

Peanut Butter will successfully hide the fucking awful taste of weed butter in everything. handy if you’re not allergic as my husband is (one of my recipes nearly killed him before we met).

I’m cooking up my vape ash for the first time right now. I think i may have underestimated my ratios but let’s face it, stronger butter is better than weaker butter.

Great site! Just got my first Volcano and I love it. I have made brownies many times by simmering my herb in oil, then using the oil for the brownie mix. I see everyone talking about butter with the Poo. Can you simmer the Poo in oil for the same effect or is the butter method necessary?

2 things I use in brownies to mask the earthy taste and smell is Mint Extract (not peppermint) and Dark Chocolate or Cacao chips/bits. Just a cpl of drops of the mint extract though. You don’t want to overdo it!

In case anyone was wondering about longevity of the volcano poo:

I had more volcano poo coming in than i could be bothered to cook, so i saved it in ziplock bags then stored them in airtight glass jars and put in a dark storage closet.

I recently made a batch today with poo that was probably MINIMUM one year old, if not older, and the potency was still very good.

So don’t hesitate to save it even if you may not be able to use it at the current time.

    • MC on May 16, 2013 at 2:13 am

Also as a side note, once you’ve created a baked good such as cookies, feel free to freeze them as they last for an equally long time.

Just had some one-two year old frozen cookies that were quite potent, and the taste was fine with zero ill effects.

    Anyone like popcorn?
Melt 2g-3g of Vpoo butter in a large pan. (Add more normal butter if needed).
Add 4-5 tablespoons of popping corn.
Stir around to coat the corn.
Let corn pop, with the lid on.
    Transfer to an eating bowl.
    Munch away.

This method is the only way that every single piece of popcorn is coated evenly and, you won’t taste the Vpoo butter. It is impossible to drizzle cannabutter over the popped corn without ruining it.

It has to be done with a pan on the cooker. Do not attempt to put cannabutter or any butter in a hot air popcorn maker.

  17. Daveyboy on April 7, 2013 at 10:13 pm

I’ve tried many of the recipes listed above. This is by far the easiest and best I’ve found.

    ……..Dark Chocolate Brownies……

    Ingredients. Serves: 24

375g butter (I use 250g of poo and top up using standard butter)
375g of the best dark chocolate you can afford
    2 cups (250g) plain flour
    1 teaspoon salt
    6 eggs
    1 teaspoon vanilla essence
    500g caster sugar

Preheat oven to 170 degrees C and lightly grease or line a 20cm square baking tray.
Melt butter and chocolate in a heat resistant bowl in microwave or in a bowl over hot water.
Mix together flour and salt then beat in the eggs, vanilla and sugar.
Add the chocolate mixture to the rest of the ingredients. If you adding walnuts, fold them into the mixture also. Pour into the baking tray. Bake for 40 minutes in the centre of the oven.
Once cooked leave to rest for 10-15 minutes.

**Individually wrapping them and storing in the freezer, makes this recipe unique.
Brownies can be eaten frozen (they have the texture of Cadbury’s ‘Wispa’ bars).

  18. Z on March 12, 2013 at 5:27 am

Not my recipe, but one i found years ago on a now defunct weed forum. thank you unknown poster!!!

1 cup butter (I used a mix of 1:2 normal butter to mull butter, but you could use all mull butter)
    2 ½ cups self-raising flour
    ¾ cup white sugar
1 ½ cups drinking chocolate powder
    2 eggs
    ¾ bag white chocolate chips
    2 tbs crunchy peanut butter

cream the sugar and butter together until smooth.
Add the drinking chocolate and cream again.
Slowly add the eggs, continuing to mix until mixture is light and fluffy.
Add the flour slowly, again mixing continually to keep the mixture from forming lumps of flour.
Add the peanut butter and chocolate chips and roughly mix again.
The mixture should stick to the spoon, but still be more liquid than a dough.
Taking a spoon, drop table-spoon sized dollops onto a pre-greased baking tray,
and place in a pre-heated oven (180 degrees Celsius).
Cook for approx. 15 minutes, or until the cookies flatten out and rise, and the chips begin to brown slightly.
Take out of oven, and allow to cool until you can pluck them from the tray. I suggest eating only one or two cookies at first, and wait a good half hour – hour for the effects to come on. The only downfall to this recipe, is the fact the cookies are DAMN delicious, and you have to continually fight the temptation to eat more.

Hi, for someone looking for recipes, look for chocolate peanut butter recipes. Peanut helps disguise the THC taste.

Please be careful to check with your friends that they aren’t allergic though. I nearly killed my boyfriend before i met him by handing over a recipe for peanut butter chocolate weed biscuits to someone else who gave them to him and nearly killed him.

My last batch i used 160g of single pass vapopoo. I ended up with 10.88oz of butter. 2oz in a batch of 12 muffins sends you into orbit.

Make ice cream cones with the butter in the batter mix. Google a recipe, they’re fun to make. That with cano bag milk iScream is the future!

    • Martia Lant on March 11, 2013 at 5:52 pm

Don’t throw that spent vapopoo. When its wrung out, there’s always that fat that won’t come through the cheese cloth. Add the VP to an oatmeal biscuit recipe. If you have loads just freeze whats leftover.

      • Gaboorgit on March 24, 2013 at 2:40 pm

Oh, if only I saw this post a month ago! I threw out the leftover poo after ringing the butter out from the cheesecloth. Now, I’m down to my last 10 cookies and it will take months to accumulate more poo. Through vaping I use less overall and now it takes longer to make poo. Oh my, oh my… what will I do?

    • Martia Lant on March 12, 2013 at 7:39 pm

Today i made a 12 portion flapjack slab. I used 60g of the wrung out spent VP. I added nothing else that could get me high. I ate half of 1 portion. It worked a treat. Was able to do things that i had to do. A full 1 will be rocket fuel.
My VP has only had 1 pass in the cano (215c-220c), so its light golden with plenty left in it.
If you don’t like the roasted flavour of VP, i suggest something to mask the taste. You can definitely taste it. I actually don’t mind it.

Worth keeping for extra herbal benefit.

1 oz light to medium brown vape
    1 stick UNSALTED butter
(i like the clarifying idea mentioned above)
1 cup of water, more or less,
slow cooker, covered, on low for two hours

fridge til butter congeals on top
    discard water
melt for use in dark chocolate brownie mix in place of the oil.

fwiw, tried it with rice krispie treats but don’t recommend vape for that – go with green krispies much better

  25. Cripfingers Nini on November 16, 2012 at 3:10 pm

24 hours in a slow cooker/crockpot with about 2-3 x volume of water to butter, at least 1/4 volume ABV to butter on WARM or AUTO. DO NOT BOIL as you lose the active ingredients. If it comes out brown instead of green you burnt it. Half a teaspoon ruins me for around 4 hours. I use a tea strainer to seive small amounts at a time and squeeze out all the goodness with the back of a spoon. chuck the greasey goo back into the slow cooker/crockpot with around same volume of full fat milk, back onto warm/auto for 2-3 hours, strain, and you got canna milk.

I’ve been making butter for a while. Few tips:

    1. Don’t boil. This evaporates the medicinal components (which is why you have a lovely smell permeating your entire house when you do). Just heat enough to melt the butter and stir well. The liquification of the butter is what does the trick, tons of heat is not necessary.

    2. Before you mix into the butter, clarify the butter first. Melt it, then let it cool until the white stuff starts solidifying and floating to the top of the yellow liquid portion. Scoop out and discard. Now you won’t have the nasty part mixed in with water at the bottom.

    3. Mixing the water in instead of using a double boiler can be helpful, as the water will dissolve some brown, nasty-tasting components. However, I’ve never tried without water, so I can’t say for sure it doesn’t harm more than help. Will try next time.

how important is it to boil the mixture uncovered? i tried this recipe with a slightly less than an ounce of vaped bud and slightly more than 2 sticks of butter. i boiled it for an hour but left the cover on the whole time. then i made brownies and felt very little effects. could this be because i boiled it with a cover on? this seems kind of silly to me but the word uncovered was capitalized in the recipe…

    • Vapormaster on October 9, 2012 at 6:02 pm

All I know is leaving the cover on ruined the butter for me. You may have ended up emulsifying some of the goodness into the water which you discarded.

    • biggbonger on January 19, 2013 at 1:16 am

      Don’t boil, don’t cover.

      • Gaboorgit on February 26, 2013 at 12:17 am

I used a double boiler I made from a wok and a pot.

Mixed 1 + 1/3 salted Irish butter (TJ’s) and 1.5 Z toasted vape leftovers. Stirred at no higher than 175 deg F for almost 3 hrs. Great smell for 1st 2 hrs.

Cooled to 100 degF. Used cheesecloth from Home Depot over a bowl and squeezed the rest using gloves as mentioned above. Tasted 1/2 teaspoon on a cracker and felt it within 1st 5 minutes + zonked. Yielded 2/3 cup, so some butter evaporated. Made 24 cookies with 1/2 my yield + TJ’s truffle brownie mix and walnuts and I wanted crushed Heathbar pieces but couldn’t find them. I thought 2 cookies would be a nice dose but just one is amazing. Who knew what was in those vape leftovers!

I made sure I did not boil or cover.

        • Gaboorgit on February 26, 2013 at 12:52 am

I wonder if I should have tried to reuse the squeezed-out grinds and added another stick of butter to get another 1/3? I threw the used grinds away as I was so overwhelmed by what I accomplished (I certainly thought and planned long enough).

I also wonder if I should have ground the leftovers further in a coffee grinder before adding to the butter for even more impact.

        • jp on January 14, 2014 at 10:09 am

If you are looking for Heath bar pieces, try looking for Skor bar pieces. My stepmother makes a recipe which involves whipped cream, ice cream, and Oreos, and I replaced the Oreos with Skor bar pieces. I love a Heath bar blizzard, and this turned out excellent.

Recipe off the top of my head:
          1 tub of whipped cream
          1 gallon? vanilla ice cream
1 containers of Oreos, crushed (Heath bar pieces, or whatever else)

I’m just guessing here, but there’s no science involved. I think this ratio will create a decent batch.

You need to melt the ice cream enough to mix everything together and re-freeze. Making my first batch of butter soon, but I’m not sure how to involve it into the recipe other than to throw the soften butter into the mixture before refreezing. I just thought it would be best to include some sort of recipe here after mentioning a dish.

  30. Nino on May 2, 2012 at 8:41 am

does the color of the leftovers effect the butter or in the making of it….someone told me before the vaperised herb…..had to have some sort of green after it was vapersided…your saying finley grounded so that would put the broken up herb…with that being said it can somewhat brown as long as its ground fine…..seeing your saying finely ground…..so a ground bag of allmost brown looking stuff if its finaly ground works…even if it looks not fluffy ?

    • Vapormaster on May 2, 2012 at 9:22 am

In my experience – the color of the leftovers does not matter. Brown leftovers make potent butter, perhaps greener leftovers would make more potent butter – but I’d sooner enjoy that green as vapor.

I am planning to do some butter with my ‘cano poo and I found this thread and its comments quite useful. However, I do not understand why you must filter the butter & poo mix in the first place? Is it due to a reduced effect or simply due to the flavor? I cannot comprehend that it could affect in anyway assumed that I have grinded the substance thoroughly. Thank you!

    • Vapormaster on April 19, 2012 at 12:31 pm

The filtering is to remove the plant material. This is more for flavor and texture than anything I guess.

      • geostash on April 19, 2012 at 1:07 pm

Thank you for your fast reply! I will probably try first without filtering and report here the results. I am planning to use ingredients that are strong in flavor (eg. chocolate) and probably pulverize the herbal ingredient to a unfilterable form. Never baked before.. This is exciting! 🙂

My question is this: has anyone done this with a slow cooker?
I am going to attempt to slow cook/crockpot on low for ~18 hours or so, im wondering if i should put the lid on the slow cooker or not.

Anyone able to help me with this?

I’m thinking you need to keep it covered or the liquid will evaporate on you. Look forward to hearing your results.

Hey, ive been vaping for about 4 months now, i vape at full temp as i like the bags to be as smokey as possible (i just believe i feel the effect alot quicker and its stronger) and have been left with a pot of VP which is about 30g or so. all of which is very browned, about the same colour as tobacco. would i need to vary the recipe mentioned above as my VP won’t still have the same ammount of the desired chemicals in it or should I just put it all in with a single stick of butter and make some kickass shit???

Also, how does this compare to a butter that was made using gear which hasn’t seen my Cano?

  34. Anti on October 12, 2011 at 7:42 pm

You don’t need to use the filter or have anything expensive. The method a chef would use to drain oil (butter) from an herb simmer is to take the solution and strain using cheesecloth.

I could make a separate thread (page) for this if people want me to with pictures and all that once I get mine delivered. I’m new here.

    VP Butter (Volcano Poo Butter)

Materials (read below, most aren’t needed – just handy)

Small canning jars (old baby food jars work also)
    Stove pot
Bowl which is larger than pot and glass or metal
    Volcano Poo

Just like I wanted my inhalation of choice to be semi-pure (and bought a vaporizer), I want my butter to be pure. My butter in the past was made using a double boiler to eliminate the addition of water. A double boiler is simply made by using a put and a bowl that will fit over the entire mouth of the pot. Fill the pot half full with hot tap water (to speed the entire process up) and place the bowl on top of the pot. Turn the stove on High. Place the butter in the bowl (I am not contesting anyone’s formulas or ratios, I have 0 experience making it from poo) along with the amount of poo.

Once the water begins to boil, it will heat the underside of the bowl (which should not be touching the water in the pot). This ensures that the bowls heat received is not only evenly distributed but also static. This causes the item placed on top, normally delicate density (chocolate, butter or other oils, etc.) will not burn, scorch, or ignite.

Every few to five minutes walk by and give it a stir. You can stir more if you want – it won’t hurt. Be paranoid or OCD like me and stir your little heart out if the mood strikes.

Let it cook as long as you can stand it. You should cook AT LEAST 15 minutes. I wouldn’t go that low, but this method of making butter has anecdotal evidence to support it. In these cases the product was left in the butter and used in baking. In this method, technically, the product steeped long as it sat for a heating time in the over during the baking process. To make a short story long (yes, I meant to type it that way) cook at least 30 – 45 minutes. The longer you cook the more plant tasting the butter gets. I have cooked a batch for 2 hours. It tasted like the product smelled.

    Turn off the stove.

I am not sure if the poo will be reusable after this (as in making another batch of butter from the same poo – it may pull out much more as there is nothing but milk-fat and the rest of the butter in the bowl with the poo). At this point I use the funnel placed in the canning jar and drape the cheesecloth over the funnel. SLOWLY start pouring the butter solution into the funnel until it has all passed. OCD people (raises hand) will want a spatula here to scrape the bowl.

I use latex gloves here. You can buy them anywhere. These are the style like what a doctor or veterinarian use. They come in boxes of 100, but you may be able to buy smaller quantities. I use them when cleaning various equipment as well.

The poo will be hot and steaming here. Be careful not to burn yourself. Let the poo sit in the funnel and cool if you need to. Once you can handle the ball of poo, pick up the cheesecloth in one hand and squeeze the ball of poo into the funnel. Get in there and get your hands dirty (gloves) and get all that juice out of the poo.

Put the lid on the canning jar and place in the fridge.

    • Vapormaster on October 14, 2011 at 2:26 pm

Thanks for the info Anti, personally I prefer the filter over the cheese cloth but that’s certainly a viable option. I think using a glass bowl would be dangerous due to the possibility of thermal shock. How does the steam escape if the bowl fits too tightly?

      • Kimmy on November 3, 2011 at 9:07 am

I prefer to use a hops bag. I found one cheap at my local homebrew store. The only time I ever tried using cheesecloth, the poo squeezed right through the fabric. A hops bag has much smaller holes, and it’s less absorbent, as it’s made from silk screening material instead of cotton.

I’ve tried the butter method as well as just tossing the duff into a high fat recipe. When doing the butter I found the smell to be too intense for my apt building. Re grinding ina coffee grinder to powder, 40gs and sub out olive oil for butter. Doesnt taste as good, not terrible either. Does wotk!

  36. SobeMiki on August 11, 2011 at 6:10 am

This was my second go at this recipe.. I tweaked it a little.. I used 40 grams of vape and 2 sticks of landolake salted butter.. About 6 cups of water.. Nice rolling boil for 30 minutes.. Strained really well.. I found that cloth works pretty good.. I used an oven mit wrapped in plastic to really squeeze out the butter.. After setting it in the fridge for about 8 hours it separated really nicely and I was able to break off the top layer of butter and discard the water.. I did encounter a thin layer of goo in between.. I didn’t want to discard it just in case it absorbed anything good.. So I re-melted the shards of butter and used it in a brownie recipe… The brownie box called for a third cup vegetable oil.. I used a half cup vape butter.. I figured I wanted them to be potent.. Today was my day off so I had a brownie for breakfast with a glass of milk.. It took almost an hour to fully kick in.. But when it did I was totally blown away.. Super intense body experience that lasted for hours!!! They definitely exceeded my expectations.. I used girahdeli caramel walnut brownie mix.. They came out perfect!! The scent of the butter blends well with the chocolate and caramel.. As I cut them into squares and wrapped them up to await my next day off all I could think was, what an amazing byproduct!! I’m so glad I switched to vaping!!

Making edibles for your friends = priceless. Not telling them the cookies are special = WRONG.

I personally do not enjoy edibles, and give all my butter to friends. If I came over to your place and your fed me edibles without my knowledge, you would A) ruin my day and B) not be much of a friend. Everyone reacts differently… some badly.

I urge you to be more considerate : )

This recipe worked great for me. I used 28 g of leftovers w/ 1 stick of butter, and boiled w/ about 3-4 cups of water for like 15-20 min. When I got to the 15 min mark the water was almost all gone so i left it on for a few more min. The hardest part was actually squeezing the product through the filter to get the most out of it. Next time I think I’ll use cheese cloth. Anyway I put the solution in the fridge overnight and was left w/ about 1/2 a cup of a greenish butter. The weird part was that I was expecting the water to be underneath but there was nothing, just butter. I baked about 2 dozen cookies and they worked great!! I am confident in saying that I am very seasoned in the smoking game & honestly eating just one was great but nothing like making it w/ un-smoked bud. The other thing was that some were much stronger than others, but they definitely did the trick, and came in great handy in vacation where I couldn’t score anything else. My buddy ate 2 1/2 and said he was out of his mind, so I’m saving my last few and will eat about 3 at once and see what happens. I think next time I will use more left overs, 40 g or so, and use more water as well. I am also considering not even baking w/ the butter and instead just putting it straight on toast. The oil method has always worked for me and this was the first time I have made butter in lieu thereof, but it worked just the same. Anybody have any thoughts on 1. Eating the butter straight up like on toast or something, & 2. Oil method vs. Butter method

    • j rott on September 30, 2012 at 9:34 pm

      1. Don’t do it. Imagine grabbing a handful of leftovers from your Volcano and eating them raw. The tastes would be quite similar.

      2. Butter worked better for me.

  42. UsefulPoo on July 8, 2011 at 6:48 am

You say to combine regular butter with your magic butter to arrive at the total the recipe calls for, does this mean do half and half?

    • Vapormaster on July 8, 2011 at 7:59 am

It means add normal butter to make up the difference. If you only have 3/4 cup of volcano butter, and the recipe calls for 1 cup, just add the missing 1/4.

  43. Kimmy on July 1, 2011 at 11:36 pm

Just out of curiosity… When you peel off the layer of butter, and there’s that kinda gross stuff between the layer of solid butter on top and the water underneath, is that also butter? My friend says she includes that part in her butter, but I’ve been scraping it off. I thought it looked pretty nasty, but if it’s just separated butter, I need to quit wasting it! Thanks for your help!

    • Kimmy on July 3, 2011 at 3:21 am

I did some research on butter, and it turns out those are milk solids. Regular butter is made up of butterfat, milk solids, and water, so the top layer is butterfat, the next layer is the milk solids, and of course, lastly, is the water. That would be the main reason we lose about 20% of our butter with this process. By the way, if you want an incredible cookie recipe that goes ever so well with this butter, let me know! It’s chocolate chocolate chip bacon cookies. Sounds weird, but totally awesome!

    • Vapormaster on July 4, 2011 at 2:00 pm

I usually scrape that gross stuff off, based on how it looks. As to whether it’s worth keeping, I don’t know….

    Maybe a wheat grass juicer?

    • Kimmy on July 1, 2011 at 11:33 pm

I find that a potato ricer can be quite helpful. Just try to find one that has different strainers, preferably with very small holes. If the holes are too big, the poo will squish right on out. Hope that helps! 🙂

  45. Big Daddy on June 24, 2011 at 8:01 pm

My issue is this: I feel like too much infused butter is lost with the boiled muck. There’s still a lot of wet weight to the sludge when pressed through the coffee filter with fingers, and I’m missing about 20% of the stick of butter I put into the boil. Any one experiment with a press of sorts to more efficiently remove the butter? The only presses that I can find online that look like they might do the job are like 150 bucks, which is an uncomfortably high price for me to experiment with.

    • Vapormaster on June 25, 2011 at 7:58 am

I totally agree. Part of the loss of butter is due to evaporation and condensation I think, but there’s certainly some extra butter tangled up in the sludge.

If you can rig your coffee filter up in a funnel, you can set it up with weight on top of the sludge, like a jar full of water.

I have a metal jar lid which is about the size of my coffee filter, I use this to apply flat even pressure to the sludge with my hands. The results have been good enough that I don’t worry too much about the sludge.

Read the Instructions again (straight )

Hey guys, check out this link here – you can make Peanut butter and Nutella cookies using this butter. It works very well. Do not measure your ingredients, be sure you weigh them out, as it works out a lot better and is more precise. Because of the liquidity of the butter I added a little bit more sugar until the texture thinkened up a bit. This is a must try!

  55. Michael Fever on September 9, 2010 at 11:36 pm

You would think that you should keep it covered to avoid the water boiling down. Do you know what the reason for having it not covered would be? I would think allowing water vapor to escape would also allow your THC vapors to escape along with the water. Keeping it covered would solve this problem. Or even better, what about doing it in a pressure cooker that allows little to no vapor to escape?

  56. Vapormaster on September 6, 2010 at 2:48 pm

@paxton – I’ve had trouble before if I let it boil too much/too rapidly or keep it covered. Maybe that tiny little bit of butter will be extra strong?

  57. paxton on September 6, 2010 at 11:45 am

Ok so the first time i did this it worked decently. Now I tried it last night and i thought it would work even better the second time around but just woke skippy downstairs ready to see my butter in the fridge and I got maybe 1/8 of a stick of butter having used a stick. Weird right? My only guess is the butter i used wasn’t high enough in fat or something because its so weird and disspointing. I used an oz of vapid to a stick of 8g fat butter and approximately 1.5 litters of water is that fine?

  58. JustWatchinItForAFriend on August 29, 2010 at 11:31 pm

Actually, I believe the alcohol would, or should, help out. If you don’t use much (say, a shot or so per stick?), it should expel all the alcohol. Remember, alcohol boils at a lower temp than water, and if you have water loss, you DEFINITELY have alcohol loss. This should leave behind the flavors of the particular alcohol. Whether or not that flavor gets conveniently trapped in the butter, I can’t guess… but the idea of rum flavored ‘canopoo butter got my mouth drooling. A bit of honey mixed in and you got the best breakfast butter around! Now I want biscuits…

    • Vapormaster on August 30, 2010 at 9:46 am

It’s certainly worth a shot (pun intended). You can also add a little of the liquor of your choice to whatever you’re baking for flavor.

  59. NOLA LISA on August 24, 2010 at 1:29 pm

thanks for the timely advice, am trying out Poo Butter now for my famous cookies. Wonder if anyone heard that using a little alcohol in poo while simmering will help draw active ingredients into butter. I like the flavor of the rum in the next stage anyway but wonder if it’s a waste to use it before straining. Am also adding lots of nutmeg, which i understand also has nice effects…
    Love Allways

    • Vapormaster on August 24, 2010 at 1:35 pm

I’ve heard of making extractions using high-proof alcohol, but my fear with using it in this process is – the butter and alcohol will both absorb the active ingredients – BUT the separation will not be as clean – I mean you can’t separate the alcohol from the water like you can the butter. The whole crux of this process is having one vehicle in play that the active ingredients will be absorbed into – which then easily separates with cooling from the other liquid. In other words, I think it’s likely to reduce the potency of your finished butter. But this is all speculation. If you have good results – please let us know!

i am doing this TODAY for the third time, and following the above recipe pretty closely, though I use about three times the vapo’d poo and about twice the butter.

i have only had good results with this method – the brownies i make are super strong, when i tested them i ate too much and was literally on the floor like an animal for about 3 hours.

and call me crazy/gross, but i do not think the butter smells or tastes bad. i think it adds a kind of awesome flavour to the chocolate of the brownies. and i like the smell of the butter while it’s cooking! maybe i am just weird?

anyway this method works b/c it is scientifically sound! what vapormaster said above about the water + butter co-mingling w/ the volcano leftovers is totally true. thanks so much it is so helpful.

We made butter yesterday. I put one stick of butter in my slow cooker and added as much vaporized leftovers as looked like enough (just so it wouldn’t be too thick) then I covered it and simmered it for a few hours. I didn’t use any water. We strained out the plant matter and let the liquid solidify. Then we warmed it up to measure it and made brownies. They tasted terrible!!! And we did not feel anything. We smoke alot so I’m sure that had something to do with it, but wondering if it is because I didn’t use water? What is the purpose of the water?

    • Vapormaster on July 1, 2010 at 3:45 am

@ Wed – That sounds like a disaster. The water does a couple of things; 1st it provides a solution for the fat in the butter to mingle with the leftovers in (better coverage), 2nd it picks up the nasty tasting water soluble flavors, and 3rd it allows you to get more leftovers to butter making the butter stronger. I also wonder if you cooked all the goodness out over a few hours. Try the recipe here, many people have good luck with it. There’s also the factor of the quality of the original ingredients and how long you vape for before considering it done. Everyone is different, so let us know what works for you.

i love my volcano, i recently made brownies from a recipe off of youtube. the guy claimed that you didn’t need to go through the extra step of making butter. but in fact you just throw it straight into the batch. i followed this recipe which called for 1 brownie mix. one extra egg. an extra 1/4th of oil and to be baked at a low temp. i used 280. basically i threw in 38.3 grams of vaped bud into the ghirardelli brownie mix (omgdank) and added 3 eggs. my recipe only called for 1 but considering how much dry plant matter was in there i thought it might help. i added a little more than the additional 1/4th of oil and i mixed that shit up. i put them in cupcake pans cooked them for 30 minutes and BAM. some of the best brownies ive ever made in my life period. ate one when they came out of the oven and an hour later my palms were sweating and i was melting in my seat (i was driving). i was stoned literally until 9-9:30pm till i ate another one. so i challenge all of you including the vapor master. get a good amount of vaped bud. make brownies. but make one batch by using butter, and another by just throwing the same amount in. post back the results and i would love an official response from Butter vs. Straight Vaped Bud

i was wondering, how can i ice out the vapor before going into my lungs with the volcano, its a great product, but i want to ice it out and moisturize it for a better journey for the throat.

How many grams is a stick of butter. I bought a 1 pound block of butter wondering if thats to much butter for 20 grams of poo

  66. paxton on March 14, 2010 at 7:32 pm

Finally tried this and it appears to have worked tremendously but I haven’t tested it yet. I have however made a video showing what I think the results should be like but I altered the amount to 4 sticks of butter to 3 oz of poo because when I first got my 2 vapes on my extreme vaporizer i would sometimes go like 5 bags. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgSdQDIV16g

Best oil around: 1.use volcano bag heavily for months w/o changing it.
    2. cut bag into two inch strips
    3. lay out strips sticky side up
    4. get a scraper of some sort-not too sharp
    5. start at top of strip and scrape downward to collect
    pure oil from each strip
    6. this is well worth the effort

  68. D4ve on February 24, 2010 at 12:58 pm

I bought a Volcano Vaporizer 3 months ago. What a fantastic device ! I usually set the temperature between 6 and 6.5. I use the material for 4 or 5 balloons, regrinding in the process. I collected 52g of poo in the process. I made butter following this recipe with 3 sticks of butter and all the poo I had. It went very well and my greenish butter has been sitting in the fridge for 3 days now.

My main concern is taste. From up close, it has the same smell the cooking produced which kind of grossed me out. Will whatever I use it in taste the same ? I suppose some recipes are better at covering the nasty taste -hence the popularity of brownies, the aroma of cocoa doing the trick. I plan on using it in brownies and banana bread.

What do you guys think ? Anyone knows any suitable recipes ?

    • Vapormaster on March 8, 2010 at 5:17 am

@D4ve – I would recommend using the butter in brownies. I think you’re right about the cocoa flavor overcoming the butter flavor. The final taste of the butter of course is dependent on the original material, how well you strain the material out, and how much water was available to absorb some of the less desirable flavors. Try this recipe – https://volcanotips.com/volcano/ultimate-volcano-butter-brownies/

  70. MG on February 4, 2010 at 4:47 pm

To anwser the dude that has a high tolerance, I would use at least 28 g of “volcano poo”(more is better) to a stick of butter. Five g’s just is not enough. Making sure to use enough water, so it can be easily strained(I use cheese cloth) into containers for seperation. Then use 2-3 times the amount of recomended butter in your baked goods, try and pick recipies that already have alot of butter in them. Throughs a great BUZZ

  71. JW on January 24, 2010 at 5:44 pm

how long does it usually take for the butter to cool enough to separate from the water?

    • Vapormaster on January 28, 2010 at 4:45 am

I usually let it sit in the fridge overnight.

  72. krondoland21 on January 12, 2010 at 4:04 am

I followed your recipe to a t except instead of 5 grams of volcano poo i used a little under a half ounce. My brother in law and I ate 5 each over a course of 4 hours and no results. Does anyone know what might be the problem. I only vape each bag 2-3 times and nothing but the headiest goes into it. Looking for someone who has a high tolerance like myself and who has had good results with butter brownies. (High tolerance being about an ounce a week through the vape) Thanks to any helpers.

    • Vapormaster on January 13, 2010 at 4:46 am

Sorry to hear that didn’t work for you. I’d encourage you to experiment with the amount of poo. There are just so many variables at play. What works for one person doesn’t necessarily for the next. Let us know how it goes!

  73. SuperStoned24/7 on December 16, 2009 at 3:04 pm

nice guide, but i was wandering about the length and tempature of heating the water/butter/vape poo mix, most of the guides that ive read have said to lightly simmer for 3-4 hours where as you say for 30 mins, what would be the best time and heat to do it for.

    • Vapormaster on December 24, 2009 at 9:03 am

In my experience the extra simmer time doesn’t make a huge difference and then the butter doesn’t separate out as easily. That being said, it might be worth experimenting…

I leave it on what I would call a “rolling simmer” – for 30 minutes and get good results.

“Thirdly, oh my god do you seriously just eat your duff? That’s the most foolish thing I’ve ever heard. And to think YOU thought you got HIGH? You’re like the kid in high school who everybody told there was alcohol in his drink, and everybody made fun of you. Vaporized or not, it doesn’t have an effect when ingested unless mixed with something with which it is soluble. Weed is alcohol-and fat-soluble, so here’s what you can do to make it good to eat (and affect you at all):”
    – Knowledgeable T:

I’ve actually heard differently. The THC Foundation website (www.THC-Foundation.com) has a lot of information about vaporizing and it’s health benefits. They have an orientation video (about 15 min long) that talks about how the chemicals in vaporized marijuana are actually activated by the vaporization process. They suggest even putting the duff into a capsule and ingesting it that way. While I don’t encourage capsules, of even putting duff into baked goods, theoretically, you could eat duff and get high.

I should note that you aren’t ingesting much THC by eating your weed, regardless of the method of ingestion. You are, in fact, ingesting the chemical Cannabidiol (CBD). CBD is not psychotomimetic in the pure form, although it does have sedative, analgesic, and antibiotic properties. CBD is the chemical responsible for many of the medical benefits of marijuana, most prominently in pain relief.

To modify my above statement and give Knowledgeable T some credit: THC is fat and alcohol soluble and will not get into your system by ingesting straight duff. However, you will get a good dose of CBD by ingesting the duff, leading to a stoned, body-high feeling.

Hope that is of some use to someone.

Nice! We truly liked this work. This is a great easy recipe for kick-ass brownies you can make with volcano vaporizers leftovers.

  77. Mazer Rackham on August 23, 2009 at 1:48 am

I have what i think is a pretty good recipe for brownies from volcano ash.

You’ll need 1 box of brownie mix(your choice, just pick one that requires veg oil) – 2 eggs – water – veg oil – and some patience lol.

Get a pan, 1-2 inches deep is just fine, set it to simmer, usually 1-3 on the temp dial on most stoves.

Most brownie recipes are going to call for one cup of veggie oil , but because of a bit of evaparation and some of the oil soaking into the plant material, use TWO cups of oil to cook down the volcano ash.

How much volcano ash you use is entirely dependent on how much you smoked it, i.e. if you got 4 full bags per container fill, its prolly pretty weak on the active ingredient content. MY scale for edibles has always been this – from MUCH testing(hehe) 1 ounce volcano ash (if you 2 bag’d all your containers. 2 ounces if you 4 bag’d it) All those quanties contain ROUGHLY the same active ingredient content. (Obviously i dont put ALL what i just listed in a set of brownies, just one of those 3 options)

Now that we got that out of the way, pour your TWO cups of veggie oil into the pan and whatever amount of volcano ash you decided upon, even it all out so thats all getting wet in the oil, find a lid for the pan, put it on top, and wait. I personally check it every few min and stir the mix so it doesnt burn(cause that burnt taste WILL carry over into your final product, and that just sucks for everyone lol) but its your call, it could prolly stand to only be bothered once every 10 min but im so OCD i can’t help but check every 2 min lol.

Normally it takes me about 45-60 min to cook down the volcano ash into the oil.

Next you’ll want a large bowl(cause it’s gonna be your mixing bowl too) and a strainer, set the strainer in the bowl and a coffee filter in that strainer – then get your oil and pour it thru the filter – this job can be a bear, cause you dont want to make a mess, so its not a bad idea to ask for a hand from a friend for a minute – you’ll need to attempt to not spill any of the plant matter into the bowl itself outside the strainer cause then your just gonna have to do more straining, and thats a pain. So get a helping hand, you hold the pan, they get a spatchla/spoon(really anything to hold back the plant material, doenst matter what it is, just not your hand, that oil is hot)and hold back the plant material while you tilt that oil into the filter – if you do it right, it’ll only take about 20-30 seconds and all the oil will be in the filter – then you get to wait for it to slowly strain thru or carefully pick it up when its cooled and close off the top of the filter and force it thru by hand, ive done it if your in a hurry, no difference in the quality of the end product, so its kind of preference i suppose.

Now the oil is gonna be dark green, maybe bordering on slightly brown, its not uncommon. Strain till your satisfied with how much fine graniles of ash is left(the fine stuff you wont taste in the brownies, so remove or dont, your call, perfectionist here, you can guess what i did lol)

Now the hard part is done – take all the ingredients listed on the brownie box and toss them into the mixing bowl with your oil and get a electric beater(i think you can hand beat it, although ive never done it that way, do it your own risk lol) and beat the living crap outta it – get it all mixed into a nice thick consistency, no dry powder spots is my rule lol.

Now get a 13×9 (or 8×8) pan, and spray it with a non-stick cooking spray, make sure you get about 2/3 of the way up the sides, common mistake to miss it when spraying, most dont even think of it, but your brownies are gonna be hugging the sides, so lets lube em up lol.

Now pour in your mix and cook according to the box instructions.

Last time i made them i tried this brownie mix that had chunks of peanut butter in it, it was sooooo good, i had to seriously restrain myself AND all my friends from eating more than one, lol.

Anyways, these brownies are always the shit, they taste good(i.e. like real brownies and not even a hint of plant taste) and best of all, they’re FREE!(since you would have trashed the ash anyways lol)

I have been reading the blogs on how to make butter from the volcano leftovers, and have a couple questions which I think may remain unanswered. First of all, when choosing how much poo to use, how many people does this take account of? For example, would 20g make a stick of butter strong enough for one person to get stoned, or several? (obviously this depends to some extent on the how well vaped the material is). Second, how long does the butter keep for? Thanks for the advice!

  79. who.knew.volcanoes? on July 20, 2009 at 3:09 pm

    Hey All,

First of all, great site, the Volcano definitely needed its own blog! It is truly an amazing piece of kit.

I just wanted to share my butter making experiences with everyone, although I am not quite done making my batch (it is currently chilling in the fridge).

I used approximately 40-45g of finely ground Volcano leftovers in a medium-large saucepan. I put in a 125g stick of butter with about 2-3 cups of water (unfortunately I was only eyeballing that part).

After occasionally mixing the butter, water and leftovers while it was on a rolling boil for about 25-30min I found that there was barely any liquid left (I guess that was to be expected). I strained it into a bowl and then squeezed as much out as possible by hand, but I know that there was still quite a bit in there. Oh well. I just wanted to throw my 2 cents in for what I would do if I made this again with this amount of leftovers.

Basically, I would double the butter and maybe add another cup of water. I think if I was making this with 20g or less, than 125g of butter and 2 cups of water would be fine. I’m scared this isn’t going to turn out well, but, I will try to remain optimistic!

I will post whether or not it was a success later, but again, great blog! Your cleaning tips really helped me solve my least favourite thing about this find piece of German engineering 😀

The stuff inside your volcano is a substance known as hash oil. The parts actually get coated in a fine oil and any debris that might slip through but it is coated in a very fine oil as well and tastes like a nice grade of hash. I make a ball of it from the parts and a better grade from the bag! I actually take the used bag and dissolve the pure oil from it with a small bit of Hi-test rubbing alcohol (90% or better). Then i pour the dissolved oil & alcohol mix into a flat plate for 24 hrs to let the alcohol evaporate out. Then i mix pure keef with this refined oil until i get a nice consistency. I consider this to be some of the best hash Ive ever smoked. Try it. This Volcano is a great source for getting the most out of your herb!

@ryan snart – congrats on your new Volcano!

1st, the icky black – I personally don’t bother saving. I reason that it’s had so much hot air passed over it, that the good stuff is likely gone. Plus, I like to think that’s the junk the Volcano is saving my lungs from!

2nd, the chunks of plant matter inside the grinder can be scraped out with a toothpick and are definitely great material to vape.

  82. ryan snart on May 14, 2009 at 1:58 pm

ok guys I bought my volcano about 6 months ago.. the icky stick black stuff that builds up.. is that worth keeping? or is it just a bunch of nasty resin? And my second is.. in the grinder that comes with the volcano – I’m getting some super thick pieces of plant material that’s stuck on the sides of the grinder from being pushed together over long periods of time.. can u vape that if u manage to scrape it off the sides..? I love this thing.. they hold there value really good too if u take care of them! GOT VAPE????

I made butter for the first time today, it worked! We decided to make rice crispy cake and YUMMY it is delicious and was super easy to make. Dude is retarded. First, it’s a mortar and pestle, but that’s irrelevant. Second, duff (vape poo? lol) tastes fucking gross, no matter how well you grind it up. Putting that trash straight into brownies is not A++ by any means. Your brownies will be some C- at best.

    – Heat in high-fat substance until greenish. This includes all double-boiler or direct methods of heating herb into oil, butter, lard, crisco – god knows what. Even whole milk and cream work. If you do a bit of research, all brownie recipes have a special method of heating it with something then straining to remove the plant matter. Your brownies shouldn’t taste bad, son!
